The Majesty of the Traditional Gujarati Bride
A Gujarati bride radiating elegance in her Panetar or Gharchola is one of the most culturally iconic sights in Indian wedding heritage.
Unlike modern pre-stitched lehengas, authentic Gujarati bridal draping demands architectural precision. Heavy silk, intricate zardozi, and hand-embroidered borders must be anchored comfortably so the bride can walk, sit at the mandap for four hours, and bow for family blessings without readjusting her pleats.
At Shree Beauty Studio in Katargam, our master drapers have styled over 2,500 Gujarati brides. Here is our masterclass on creating the definitive Gujarati wedding look.
Step-by-Step Panetar Saree Draping (Sidha Palla)
1. The Foundation Wrap
Begin by tucking the plain end of the Panetar into the petticoat waistband at the navel, circling around clockwise. Ensure the hem rests exactly one centimeter above the floor with bridal heels on.
2. Measuring the Front Pallu
Take the pallu end and pass it behind the back, bringing it over the right shoulder from back to front. The pallu length should reach mid-calf or knee level to allow comfortable movement.
3. Precision Box Pleats
Fold 6 to 8 crisp, 5-inch pleats across the front waist. Secure them with a reinforced safety pin inside the petticoat to distribute the heavy silk weight evenly.
4. Spreading the Chest Pleats
Fan out the front pallu across the chest from right shoulder to left hip. Secure the outer corner neatly at the left waist seam using a decorative bridal brooch.
